ITP stands for Immune Thrombocytopenia (also known as Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura). It is an autoimmune condition where your immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys platelets in your blood. Platelets are important cell fragments that help your blood clot when you have an injury.
Many people don't know they have ITP at first and may only discover it during routine blood work. A normal platelet count is between (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators) platelets per microliter of blood. Common symptoms of ITP include:
- Small red/purple dots on skin (petechiae)
- Frequent nosebleeds that are hard to control
- Bleeding gums
- Blood blisters in mouth
- Unexplained bruising
- Fatigue
- Heavy menstrual periods
While there's no cure for ITP, various treatments are available to help manage symptoms and improve platelet counts. In children, ITP often resolves on its own, while adults may develop chronic ITP requiring ongoing treatment.
